Woo hoo! Spring has definitely sprung, as my dad used to say!

So, of course, this week’s painting is focused on the summer! 🤣

Sunflowers.

They are incredibly satisfying to paint, especially when you take on an impressionist approach to the painting – which was the focus for this session.

For me, this painting is about giving enough detail for the viewer’s mind to kick in and fill in the blanks and create their own ‘story’ for the picture.

Over the last year (almost) of painting, this has been one of my most notable challenges. I’m a detail person, and I can get too carried away in the detail of something that I lose sight of the overall picture.

I have to work at it. I have to consciously work at giving enough that it makes sense without going into the FULL detail.

“Good enough is good enough” is something I learnt many years ago but didn’t really appreciate until about 7 years ago.

You can ALWAYS add more… more details… more touches… more brushstrokes…

… but is it really adding to the overall outcome?

And that also begs the question of is anything ever truly ‘finished’?

If we get too wrapped up in adding too much (and unnecessary) detail, it can have a knock-on effect in other places.

Maybe you get behind with the things you planned to do, which can cause overwhelm, stress and anxiety?

Maybe you struggle to get things finished because, in your eyes, they aren’t finished?

Maybe you spend so much time focusing on the small stuff that you miss out on the stuff that really matters?

All of those were me.

Learning to let go before YOU feel something is ready can be hard, especially if one of your values is to overdeliver and give as much value as you can…

… But, ask yourself this simple question…

“Is me adding this [blank] going to create a bigger impact or better outcome for [the user/client/friend/situation]?”

If the answer is “yes” then it’s probably worth doing.

If the answer is “No” or “Not really”, then ask yourself where else in your life you could create a bigger impact or better outcome with the time you would have spent instead.

It’s worked for me.

It’s worked for my clients.
