This week, I’m still playing around with the abstract…

Not quite sure where the idea for this one came from, but it’s an interesting and pleasing form.

One of the joys of painting is that not everything has to make sense (just look at Picasso and other Impressionists!) For me, sometimes, it’s just about what emotions and feelings and thoughts I notice when reflecting on a piece of art. Just allowing what comes up to come up, just because (as my dad used to say)…

Sometimes we can spend too long trying to “work something out” – What did the artist mean when he painted that?; what was the artist on when he painted that?; what’s the bigger meaning behind what he was thinking?

Sometimes an artist paints just because…

And sometimes we try to make sense of everything too much.

And we can spend a lot of time trying to figure out the meaning of something when maybe, just maybe taking the approach of “just because” could serve us better.

When I started my own spiritual journey, I was constantly looking for the reason behind events. What was the lesson for me to learn? Why did this happen? What do I need to do to let go?

And yes, questioning, asking why, is an important attitude to have. But it can also be destructive. We can also start looking for the meaning behind the meaning… and then we can start to create thoughts (which may or may not be true), which at best can be unhelpful, energy zapping and not really useful, or at the other end of the scale could lead to elements of paranoia.

I believe that behind everything that happens in our lives is a lesson… there is always something to learn about ourselves and how we can improve if we want to follow a desire to be the best we can be.

In the beginning, I used to question everything… sometimes getting stuck down the proverbial rabbit hole.

What I have learned is that the lessons present themselves and we notice (and engage in) them when we are ready to learn them.

Sometimes they are obvious lessons. Sometimes not so.

I’ve chosen to take a more ‘abstract-art-just-because’ approach to situations I don’t understand… trusting that the lesson for me will become clear when it’s meant to.

It’s not a bad thing to question, but it can be destructive if we allow the pursuit of an answer to consume us.

Learn to let go…
