We spend so much time in our own heads that we miss out on so much of what is going on around us in the moment. This is why understanding the power of now is so important to fully enjoying life.
Let me explain…
I was arranging a call with my friend the other morning, and she asked me what would be a good time.
In my usual bantering style I answered “I find that “now” is usually the best time, but “a little later” can also be good 🤔🤣”
And it got me thinking… the other thing I could have added was “…. and I find “yesterday” is usually a waste of time!”
We spend so much of our time in our heads, in the Land of What Ifs!
We are back in the past… thinking or worrying about what might have been… “What if I’d done this instead?” and “What if I’d said that?” or “I wish that I’d …”
Or we spend it in the future… worrying about what hasn’t happened yet… “What if she…?” and “What if they don’t…?” or “What if I get… ?”
We spend so much of our time running through endless scenarios, worrying about what has happened, what might happen, what could happen – wishing things could be different, wishing we could change things – only to realise that everything is exactly as it was, or, if in the future, has yet to be decided…
… instead of being present, “in the now”, which is the ONLY place we can make a difference or change anything – right now – this exact moment.
The Power of Now
As part of my own journey, this is something I have been working on to master since I reread “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle last year. It’s an awesome book, and I’m going to share with you the concepts I have adapted and put into practice.
“When you surrender to what is and so become fully present, the past ceases to have any power. You do not need it any more. Presence is the key. Now is the key.” Eckhart Tolle
Being in the now is such a simple concept to learn – there are just 3 steps:
Step 1 – NOTICE what’s happening – teach yourself to recognise when your mind is wandering in the Land of What Ifs – when your mind has gone back to the past or in to the future, when you are not truly present to what’s happening around you right now. It could be that you find yourself worrying about situations or events where you have no control over the outcome.
Step 2 – ACKNOWLEDGE the learning – don’t resist or push down any thoughts or emotions which are coming up. Acknowledge them. Put your hands on your heart centre and allow the emotion to be, and then ask it “What do you need me to know right now?” Sit with the emotion. Feel it and note down anything which comes up. If it helps, make a list of the things which you are concerned about (particularly if it is something in the future which is worrying you) – journal on it to release it and let it go.
Step 3 – TRUST you have what you need – trust that you have all of the information you need right now, and trust you WILL have all of the information, resources and knowledge you need to take the appropriate action, when you need it.
By following these three steps – and focusing on just taking the “next step” – you can learn to let go of those thoughts, emotions and the energy you are putting into things which you cannot control, and start to be more present and enjoy the beauty of everything which is happening around you right now.
With practice, it becomes second nature and you will find yourself being able to get to a place of clarity and peace much more quickly as well as releasing those emotions which are holding you back from moving forwards.
When you understand the power of now, can be in the present, and accept the past and the future for what they truly are, you can start to realise what true freedom really is.
