A well-fed Robin, sitting on a sturdy branch (well, it had to be sturdy!) – something most of us associate with Winter and Christmas.

When preparing for a painting, I like to do a bit of research. When it’s a lesson, we get supplied with a reference picture (or sometimes two) which we will be working from. Sometimes, I like to do a bit of additional research as well.

So, taking the Robin as an example, I studied quite a few photos and try and get a sense of character.

It may not surprise you to learn that although Robins ‘look the same’ – we can easily identify them as Robins – they are all similar, but with little characteristic differences…

It may be the shape and shade of the chest feathers or a change in colour around the eyes. Some can be quite round and others not so… all minute differences which make that individual Robin unique.

As are we.

We can spend so much of our time trying to be the same as others around us. Trying to fit in. After all, it’s what we are taught growing up. It’s what is expected of us. We do, and we can start to lose our identity.

But the real you, the unique you, is always there. Inside. At times feeling trapped.

One of the things I have learned is to be more “me”. Accepting ourselves as we are, it’s probably one of the hardest things we have to face. Yet it’s only hard because of the expectations p[ut on us as we grow up.

And it always inspires me when one of my clients gets the message… “Be more you!”

It’s something we should all explore. It’s something that none of us should ever be ashamed of talking about with others. It’s something we should be proud of.

So as you spend time with loved ones, friends and family this Christmas, take a few moments to notice the differences and celebrate them.

For sure, life would be different if we were all identical!
