Autumn Hills

Autumn Hills

28th October 2021

Today’s painting goes back to the great outdoors and fitting autumnal colours.

Layered acrylics put on dry to give the subtle shifts in colour to give depth and then some light pen work on the house to suggest detail.

This felt more comfortable and natural to me this time and besides:

repetition + minor adjustments to my technique = improved result.

Sometimes change can be instant and massive, especially when it’s something out of our control that happens to us. Other times change is about sustained micro changes which are incremental in the improved outcome.

With painting, just becoming more free with applying colour in a less critical way and going with gut and instinct can produce a significant change.

Focusing more on repetition of technique with micro improvements develops your “style”.

Life is about a mixture of these.

Sometimes something big happens which will have a massive life-changing effect, whether it’s something we instigate or something which happens outside of our control. But if you keep waiting for the big things to happen, you will spend most of your life waiting or allowing things to happen to you.

None of us should be hanging around waiting for things to happen if we truly want to achieve what we desire in life – we have to take control.

Micro changes, those little things which we can adjust, adapt, modify various aspects of our life, or where we can have the biggest impact in the longer term.

Two books I would recommend that talk about micro changes are The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy, and Atomic Habits by James Clear.

I am seeing more and more of my business lessons reflected in my painting journey, which I find very interesting.

What improvements, however small, can you make to a situation in your life which you’re not happy with to take back control and move forwards?

With love xx
